The Courier-Journal (Ky.) offers this profile of several Arab-Americans living in the Louisville area.
The article notes, "freedom has become a more complicated concept for Arab-Americans since the 2001 terrorist attacks and the war in Iraq." A student recalled that "he and his Muslim friends at duPont Manual High School faced more questions after Sept. 11."
Despite the chilling effect on speech that the Patriot Act has created, "Arab-Americans said Louisville has been highly supportive of their community." For example, "Soon after the Sept. 11 attacks, vandals defaced the Louisville Islamic Center mosque on River Road with anti-Muslim graffiti. The incident drew an outpouring of support in the form of flowers, calls and a visit from Mayor Dave Armstrong."
