The questions of whether Muslims should be integrated into British society to some acceptable degree, and how such integration should be acheived, have been the subject of various scholarly articles, press reports, and other commentary [see previous posts here].
Kate Holton of Reuters offers this interesting piece, which suggests that athletics is "play[ing] a major role in [a London housing] project's transformation into a positive example of integration in Britain's increasingly multicultural society."
One of the organizers of weekly soccer training sessions in London notes, "We don't look at color or what culture you are. You come here under the umbrella of sport. The main aim wasn't the level of football, but it was to get kids off the street."
After the bombings of 7/7, the head of the Commission for Racial Equality, warned that Britain was "'sleepwalking our way to segregation.' He singled out sports as one way of halting this."
