Attack not a Hate Crime

Police in Columbia, Missouri are stating that an attack on a Middle Eastern man was not a hate crime due to "that the assailants were motivated because of race."

According to police reports, "Haitham Alramahi, 22, was walking home about 2 a.m. when he was struck by a car.... He was in the crosswalk, but the car did not stop at the stop sign. He said four or five men got out of the car."
“I thought they were going to help me,” said Alramahi in an interview. Instead, they shouted racial epithets at him, telling him to go back to Iraq, he said."
The police argued, "simply using racist language during an assault does not automatically mean the crime was originally perpetrated because of race."

what more "evidence" do they need?? the statements made in teh course of a crime is a hate crime!!?

if the incident doesn't fit the statutory definition, then there's nothing the police can do!! you can't invent a law just because you think the person committed acts worthy of punishment

When i've read this article I got shocked because Alramahi is my friend and I lived in Col. MO for a while and I've met alot of nice people in there but about the racial attack I think the police should've given it more care and prosecuted the criminals because if he's originally an arab that doesn't mean it's a motive to attack him cuz Haitham is a very kind person but he got such a bad luck.
