To further respond to critics who feel that the Muslim community has not 'enthusiastically' condemned specific acts of terrorism and the general use of violent means to achieve redress for some particular grievance, we submit the following article noting that:
- "American Muslim scholars issued an edict yesterday condemning religious extremism and calling terrorists "criminals, not 'martyrs,'" and
- "Many Muslim leaders overseas have made similar statements in recent weeks."
However, the existence of disagreement as to whether there are exceptions to a blanket prohibition against terrorism as an acceptable means of achieving results does not mean that, on the whole, Muslim groups have not assumed responsibility for speaking out against terrorism -- indeed, these anti-terrorist fatwas continue to be issued by Muslim leadership throughout the world, well after the attack on 7/7 and attempted bombings of 7/21.
